Youth For Understanding (YFU) is a global nonprofit network dedicated to advancing intercultural understanding, lifelong learning, global competence, mutual respect, and social responsibility through transformative educational exchanges for generations of youth, families and communities.
This mission is brought to life by our caring host families, dedicated volunteers, and professional staff. These individuals shape the YFU experience and carry our vision forward.
Since 1951, YFU has enabled more than 310.000 young people to live and learn in a new culture - building bridges across differences and nurturing the values that connect us: empathy, curiosity, and respect. This makes us one of the oldest and most trusted youth exchange organizations in the world and a leader in intercultural education.

Our programs go far beyond travel or study abroad. They offer deep cultural immersion combined with a strong educational foundation, creating experiences that leave a lasting impact on individuals and communities alike. We are proud to be a network of 45 member organizations across six continents, each working to create meaningful exchange opportunities and foster a more connected and compassionate world. Through our exchange programs, educational offers, volunteer engagement, and advocacy efforts, YFU contributes to making the world a better place - one person at a time.
