Marika

A family that keeps saying “yes” to the world

What started with a single, inspiring conversation eventually turned into more than two decades of hosting exchange students and creating global connections. For Marika, a longtime YFU host mother, the journey began when her son took part in a YFU short-term exchange program in Germany. The experience opened her family’s eyes to the incredible value of intercultural exchange, but they never imagined just how deeply it would become a part of their everyday lives.

Shortly after her son's return, the family decided to take the leap and welcome their very first exchange student from Brazil. What started as an exciting new chapter quickly grew into something much bigger. The student became a true member of the family, and years later, he even returned to visit, proving that the bonds formed during an exchange year can withstand both distance and time.

Hooked on the joy of cultural exchange, Marika’s family chose to open their hearts and home again and again. Not long after their first student returned home, they welcomed another, and then another.

Over the years, hosting became about much more than just welcoming students into her own home, it became about building a community. Inspired by her experiences, Marika stepped up as a YFU volunteer and Area Representative at YFU France. In this role, she has helped bring local host families together through regular gatherings and community events, creating a vibrant network of support that extends far beyond the exchange year itself.

"Every student brought a different perspective, culture, and story, enriching not only our family but also the wider community around us." Today, after hosting dozens of students from all corners of the world, Marika affectionately refers to them as her "23 children."

The bonds she formed extended well beyond the students themselves, bridging families across continents; today, many of the students and their natural parents remain in close touch, returning for visits and staying an active part of Marika’s life long after the official exchange programs ended.

Looking back on more than 20 years with YFU, Marika believes the most meaningful part of hosting has always been the relationships. For her, hosting was never just about providing a place to stay. It was about creating a home, building lifelong connections, and opening her arms to the world.

That simple decision to say “yes” to intercultural exchange, repeated over the years, has truly transformed lives, including her own.
